TAN (Tax Deduction Account Number)

What is TAN (Tax Deduction Account Number)?

Tax Deduction Account Number (TAN) is a unique 10-character alphanumeric code issued by the Income Tax Department of India to entities (such as employers, companies, or organizations) responsible for deducting or collecting tax at source under the Income Tax Act, 1961.

It is mandatory for all persons who are required to deduct or collect tax (TDS/TCS) on payments such as salaries, rent, professional fees, or contractor payments.

Key Features:

  • Issued by: Income Tax Department, Government of India.
  • Format: TAN consists of 10 alphanumeric characters (e.g., DELH12345A).
  • Purpose: Used for quoting in all TDS/TCS-related documents like returns, challans, and certificates.
  • Mandatory Requirement: Without a valid TAN, entities cannot deposit TDS/TCS with the government.
  • Uniqueness: Each deductor (employer/company) has one unique TAN.
  • Registration: TAN can be applied online through the NSDL website.

Example

Example TAN: MUMA12345B
Scenario:
XYZ Pvt. Ltd., based in Mumbai, pays monthly salaries to its employees and deducts TDS before making payments. The company must obtain a TAN to deposit this deducted tax with the government and to issue Form 16 to employees. All TDS challans and returns filed by XYZ Pvt. Ltd. will quote MUMA12345B as its TAN.

Why TAN Matters?

  • Ensures proper credit of TDS/TCS to the deductee’s (employee’s or vendor’s) account.
  • Mandatory for filing TDS returns, issuing TDS certificates, and making TDS payments.
  • Helps the Income Tax Department track tax deductions and collections across organizations.
