ESI/ESIC (Employee State Insurance)

What is ESI/ESIC (Employee State Insurance)?

Employee State Insurance (ESI) is a social security and health insurance scheme introduced by the Government of India under the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948. It is designed to provide medical and financial protection to employees and their families during contingencies like sickness, maternity, disability, and employment-related injuries. Administered by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), the scheme benefits workers in factories, commercial establishments, hotels, and other industries with 10 or more employees.

Key Features:

  • Both employers and employees contribute to the ESI fund; typically, the employer contributes 4.75% and the employee 1.75% of wages (up to ₹21,000 monthly wage ceiling).
  • The scheme provides comprehensive benefits such as medical treatment, sickness allowance, maternity benefit, disablement benefit, dependent’s pension, and funeral expenses.
  • Medical care is available through ESIC’s extensive network of hospitals, dispensaries, and clinics across India.
  • Cash benefits help employees during periods of sickness or disability, ensuring financial stability.
  • The scheme also provides unemployment benefits in case of employment loss due to disability.

Example

Seema works for a textile firm in Bangalore and earns ₹15,000/month. Both she and her employer contribute to ESI. When she falls ill and takes leave for two weeks, she receives a sickness benefit amounting to 70% of her wages during that period. Her family can also access medical care in ESIC hospitals without extra cost.

Why ESI Matters?

ESI safeguards the health and income of workers in India’s organized sector, offering social security and affordable healthcare. It supports employees in their medical and financial needs, improving their well-being and productivity.

Tip: If your employer deducts ESI contributions, ensure you receive an ESI card for easy access to healthcare benefits and keep track of contribution payments.
