What is Job Role? Meaning & definition
A job role refers to the role and responsibilities of an employee in an organisation. This describes what a person does in their role in the company. Whilst a job title provides a label for a position, a job role establishes the functional scope, operational boundaries, and performance standards expected of the individual in that capacity.
What are the key components of a job role?
- Job Title – This is the official designation that the employee will be known by.
- Job Description – A detailed overview of what the role is.
- Responsibilities – These are the duties, KRAs and deliverables expected from an employee.
- Skills and Qualifications – The technical skill set, education, qualifications and personal skills needed for the role.
- Reporting Lines – Who is the employee reporting to?
- Performance Requirements – Key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Job Context – The environment the employee will be in, whether this is onsite or remote, what tools they will use and who they will interact with.

- Management/Supervisor – These roles would be for someone who will implement strategies and manage the performance of the team.
- Individual Contributor – These are specialist roles that will carry out specific tasks.
- Administrative/Operational – These roles would be core roles in the business.

Why is defining a job role important?
It is very important to have clear job roles to avoid confusion. This will reduce duplication of work and ensure accountability. Creating clear job roles will help with recruitment, performance reviews, career progression and fair pay. This will increase employee engagement as they will understand what they contribute to the overall goals of the organisation.
What is the difference between a job role and a job title?
A job title is simply what your role is called. For example Senior Marketing Executive. This will give them a title to show their position in the business. A job role will cover what they actually do in their role. What tasks they will complete, what skills are required, who they will report to and what KPI’s they will have. Two employees in different departments may have the same job title but vastly different job roles depending on what they do on a daily basis.
