Salary Breakup

What Is Salary Breakup? Definition and Meaning

A salary breakup describes the different elements that make up a total salary package. It details how much of your salary you are being paid in basic pay, allowances, bonuses and statutory deductions. This gives you an understanding of what your total Cost to Company (CTC) is broken down into and how much you are earning each month.

Why is a Salary Breakup Important?

Having an understanding of a salary breakup is important for both employers and employees. It allows you as an employee to understand what you are being taxed, how much is going into your pension and your net pay. As an employer it will ensure you are adhering to statutory labour laws within the country you work in. It will also ensure you are paying your employees in a consistent way and have optimal taxation plans. As there will be no confusion when negotiating or accepting a job offer.

Components of Salary Breakup

  • Basic Salary – This is your base salary. It will determine how much of your salary is being taken out for statutory calculations.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA) – Money given to help cover costs of housing. This can be exempt from taxation.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA) – A payment to adjust for inflation.
  • Special Allowance – A flexible allowance that can be taxed. Used to top up any remaining CTC.
  • Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) – Money given to cover travel costs for time off.
  • Bonus/Performance Bonuses – Extra money given to you based on your performance, department performance or overall company growth.

Statutory Deductions in Salary Breakup

  • Employee Provident Fund (EPF): A mandatory retirement savings scheme where specific percentages are deducted from basic earnings and matched by the employer.
  • Gratuity: A statutory monetary benefit paid to employees upon completion of a minimum tenure of continuous service.
  • ESI (Employee State Insurance): A social security health insurance scheme providing medical benefits to eligible salary brackets.
  • Professional Tax: A state-level tax levied on salaried employees based on income slabs.
  • TDS (Tax Deducted at Source): Income tax withheld directly by the employer on behalf of the tax authorities based on anticipated annual earnings.

Salary Breakup in Offer Letters

Including a formal salary breakup schedule in your offer letters helps avoid confusion. It should show what your fixed salary is, what your variable salary is and how much your employer is contributing to statutory. Having a clear offer letter will help build trust with candidates, speed up your recruitment process and ensure they know exactly what to expect financially.
