What is Salary Structure? | Meaning & Definition
Salary structure indicates the breakdown of total compensation paid to an employee by an organisation. It describes how your total compensation will be broken down into a package containing elements such as fixed salary, variable pay, statutory and allowances. Salary structure ensures that all roles within the company are fairly compensated, legal requirements are met and there is absolute clarity around your take home pay and tax.
Types of Salary Structures
- Gross Salary Structure: It comprises your total salary before you have to pay any statutory deductions such as income tax and pension.
- Cost to Company (CTC) Structure: This includes everything an organisation will spend on you in one year, such as basic salary, allowances, benefits and statutory employer contributions.
- Fixed Variable Salary Structure: This is a combination of a fixed salary and variable bonuses based on performance.
- Graded Pay Structure: This structure gives different grades of salary based on the level of the job. The salary will be determined by how senior the role is, what level of responsibility it has and what skills are required.
Components of Salary Structure
- Basic Salary: The core, non-variable core earnings that form the foundation of the compensation package and determine statutory calculation thresholds.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): A financial allowance paid to assist employees with rented accommodation costs, often linked to tax exemption criteria.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): A cost-of-living adjustment allowance designed to offset the impact of inflation on fixed earnings.
- Special Allowance: A flexible fixed component added to balance total CTC expectations after allocating standard allowances.
- Conveyance Allowance: A stipend provided to cover commuting expenses incurred between an employee’s residence and work location.
- Provident Fund (PF): A mandatory retirement savings scheme where both employee and employer contribute set percentages of basic earnings.
- Gratuity: A statutory benefit paid by an employer as appreciation for continuous service upon an employee’s departure after a specified tenure.
- Bonus and Incentives: Variable payments awarded based on individual performance, department targets, or overall company profitability.
How to Calculate Salary Structure
- Total Cost to Company (CTC) – Work out how much total money you will be paid throughout the year.
- Basic Salary – Allocate 40-50% of your total CTC to your basic salary.
- Allowances – Work out how much you will receive in HRA, conveyance and special allowances based on company policy and tax.
- Statutory Deductions – Work out how much you and your employer will pay into your retirement fund.
- Net Take-Home Pay – Subtract the employee statutory and tax deductions from your total gross pay.
