Suspension

What is Suspension?

A job suspension is a formal method of discipline and risk management which allows a temporary removal of an employee from his/her duties and workplace. Being suspended means being exempted from work, and an employer utilises it as a critical disciplinary and risk-management tool. The main purpose of an employee suspension is to ensure the safety and stability of the workplace and relations between employees and the administration.

Key Features

Types of Suspension

  • Investigatory Suspension (With Pay): Implemented while an organisation investigates serious allegations, such as harassment or fraud. The employee receives full compensation, and the work suspension ensures an unbiased investigation by preventing potential evidence tampering or workplace disruption.
  • Disciplinary Suspension (Without Pay): This form comes after an investigation has concluded and a violation has been confirmed. It functions as a formal penalty, a consequence for conduct that’s already been established as a breach of policy. Because it’s disciplinary in nature, the employee does not receive pay for the suspension period.

Examples of Suspension

  • Investigatory: A financial officer of a company is placed on a paid suspension until an internal auditing department clarifies some irregularities on the balance sheets. Thus, the company wants to ensure that no fraudulent actions have been taken by the officer, and the financial area is safe.
  • Disciplinary: An employee gets a three-day suspension without pay due to several unauthorised absences, although he was previously warned about absence without leave. This example illustrates disciplinary action which was taken due to the violation of the core company policies.

Why Suspension Matters

A well-defined suspension policy serves a few essential purposes:

  • Protects the Workplace: No chance for any hazards regarding workplace safety, functioning, and legal issues is present.
  • Ensures Due Process: There would not be any destruction of evidence or witness intimidation. And this process would be given enough time to take place.
  • Sets Clear Boundaries: To show employees that management cares about a safe working environment and regulations.
