Restricted Holiday

What is Restricted Holiday?

A restricted holiday, often referred to as an optional or floating holiday, is a designated day on an organisation’s master calendar that employees can choose to observe based on their personal, cultural, or religious preferences.

Unlike fixed public holidays where an entire enterprise closes, restricted holidays keep the business operational while offering individual team members the flexibility to take time off for occasions that hold personal significance.

Eligibility & Importance of Restricted Holiday

  • Eligibility: Companies typically provide a curated list of optional holidays at the beginning of the year and set an annual limit (for example, allowing staff to select two out of ten listed dates).
  • Importance: This policy respects diversity within a multicultural workforce without disrupting daily business operations, as team members do not all take leave on the same day.

Example of Restricted Holiday

An enterprise lists optional holidays for regional festivals such as Eid, Diwali, Yom Kippur, or Thanksgiving. An employee who observes Thanksgiving can apply for a restricted holiday on that date. Their request is logged in the HR portal, deducting one day from their annual optional holiday allowance while the rest of the team continues working.

Why Restricted/Optional Holidays Matter

Incorporating floating holidays into enterprise leave management delivers distinct workplace advantages:

  • Fosters Inclusion: Demonstrates respect for diverse religious and cultural backgrounds by allowing staff to celebrate significant events without consuming their standard personal leave.
  • Maintains Business Continuity: Because employee leave dates are staggered rather than company-wide, operations, customer support, and project workflows remain fully active.
  • Empowers Work-Life Choice: Grants staff greater control over their leave allocation, boosting workplace morale and overall job satisfaction.
