Hello Everyone,
I am back with yet another edition of Talent Tech Talk- Blog. From covering the dynamics of billion-dollar HR deals, to latest trends & events in HR Tech to the science of assessment & talent management, we have come a long way in this series.
From where we left in the previous blog, talking about talent, the way the workforce works or prefers to work has seen a massive shift. Today the #newcodeofwork comprises of hyper connected workplaces and workstations moving to cafes and co-working spaces. With over 900 employees, a product tech platform which is being used by over 4.5 million people worldwide, including Jeff Bezos and with a close to Billion dollar valuation InVision is changing the way people work & collaborate and Guess…….the Number of offices Invision has?…
Zero, Yes, ZERO.
We are not concerned about Jobs, what we should be concerned about is livelihoods. Please consider the following 5 points to decipher the advent & rise of #GigEconomy.
Why Gig is Needed: Extreme focus on Jobs happened due to political agenda setting and people could not relate to work in any other fashion. But the next phase of growth for countries like India will not come from traditional roles or jobs in formal/informal economy- permanent or temporary but from the rise of #Gig.
Visibility & Transparency: Jobs will be done at the smallest unit level with strong output orientation therefore, customer (enterprises or startups all alike) will know where they are spending their monies.
Inclusiveness: Today we have biases for gender, age, caste, ability when we look at jobs. However, work in its smallest unit will democratise and opportunities will offer livelihoods than an illusion of so-called “Jobs”.
Freedom of Choice: #GigWorker can work at their pace, time & place.
Quota, Reservation & Politics: It would become immaterial & irrelevant that who is doing the work rather the best price matches the best person. Merit will prevail without compromising opportunities or luck or jack.
Some real action on-ground & data which shows the need of #GigEconomy
1. NewCodeofWork: This will have AI engines allocating and matching tasks with people to defined outcomes and not necessarily the jobs. I met a remarkable startup called Awignand they are doing some exciting work in this area.
2. So called Freshers : 33 Million students enrol in AICTE for UG programmes, 20 Million admissions, 12 Million Pass Out and about 7 Million get some kind of work
3. Job is not just a political issue and the only way to create work at the pace that India needs is feasible in form of #Gig than in form of Jobs.
4. Both jobs in traditional sense & #Gig will co-exist but legislation (Esops, social security), HR Technology (payroll-hourly/part-time benefits) and #Ecosystem (co-working spaces/plug& play systems/gig platforms & dignity of labour) all need to re-invent themselves with #newcodeofwork.
As Ghalib rightly equated love and work in context of pain: “Gham-e-ishq gar na hota, toh gham-e-rozgar hota” (Had it not been love, it would have been the plight of work).
I hope this creates enough interest in the new world of work. Stay tuned for the next topic of this series where we will cover the way organisations (especially startups) should #scaleup & can script the #NewCodeofWork
